Poverty and unemployment are overwhelming challenges confronting individuals living at the Southern border.  The El Paso Times reports that the metropolitan statistical areas with the four highest poverty rates in the country all lie along the Texas-Mexico border; unfortunately, 36% of individuals living in the Mesilla Valley make wages below the national poverty line.

Because of language barriers, education gaps, discrimination, and other obstacles- the economic challenges confronting the women living in Anthony are especially severe. In fact, 58% of participants at the Women's Intercultural Center report yearly household incomes below $5,000, and 78% lack health insurance.  Nearly half of the women using the Center’s services have not attended school beyond the sixth grade.

Thus, to create economic opportunities, on-the-job skills training, and stable employment for local women, several profit-generating initiatives operate at the Center.  The services provided by the Center’s female participants include the following:

Event Catering
One of the most exciting additions to the Center- the installation of a commercial kitchen- has prompted an equally thrilling initiative: a cooperative catering business.  Together, local women prepare extraordinary meals for events occurring at the Center and at locations around the Mesilla Valley.  The cooperative’s chefs are excited to cater business luncheons, family gatherings, and more.
